EXPERIMENT 3 - THE BRIDGE

Overview

POWER! Is the ability to act on strengths in order to accomplish something of great value.

The two companies I have chosen to base my design on are Facebook and Coca-Cola, easily two of the most well known brands in the world.

I decided to base my design around the brand name itself, as this is both of the companies most valuable asset. My headquarters for both Facebook and Coca-Cola represent the the brand in a way which expresses the power of the brand names themselves.

Design

The headquarters I designed for Facebook is based upon the well known logo (see below). The 'f'' has become one the most recognisable symbols around the globe, with over 800 active uses. Due to the obvious popularity of Facebook, I wanted to design a headquarter that can be easily recognised as Facebook.

Coca-Cola is well recognised by the smooth curves in its logo that spell out its brand name. Similar to Facebook, this logo is recognisable by ridiculous amounts of people around the globe. My design is based upon the 'C' in the Coca-Cola logo (see below), with slow smooth curved surfaces creating an overall shape that represents the company.

The Valley

The valley I have chosen is the 'Three Sisters' which is a rock formation located in the Blue Mountains, NSW. I thought this would be a dynamic environment to create in CryEngine as I wanted to explore all three rock formations by incorporating all of them within my design.

MashUp of articles

Facebook- http://gigaom.com/2012/04/09/here-is-why-did-facebook-bought-instagram/

To this day, Coca-Cola still imports coca leaves which are used to manufacture cocaine in the United States’

United States still aggressively pursues an eradication policy that encourages Andean governments to spray their forests with toxic chemicals to eliminate this medicinal crop

It is illegal to import or possess the leaves under U.S. law -- unless you're the Coca-Cola company.
the company long ago convinced the U.S. government to exempt it from the law.

Coca-Cola is the only U.S. corporation that has been granted the right to legally import coca leaves into the United States

Coca-Cola is the only U.S. corporation that has been granted the right to legally import coca leaves into the United States

You might have heard by now that Facebook has acquired Instagram for nearly a billion dollars in cash and stock

Facebook was scared shitless and knew that for first time in its life it arguably had a competitor that could not only eat its lunch, but also destroy its future

Facebook and Instagram are two distinct companies with two distinct personalities
Instagram has what Facebook craves – passionate community

But then the road from product and a platform to a business is long, twisted and full of potholes. Perhaps that explains why the Instagram team decided to cash in their chips

Take-Two Interactive-
http://www.businessweek.com/innovate/content/feb2008/id20080225_899358.htm

The video game giant throws a $2.1 billion pitch for the maker of the smash-hit Grand Theft Auto series and exclusive MLB titles

But the rich asking price, which drove Take-Two's shares to record Nasdaq stock market gains on Feb. 25, may not be all that's required.

EA is offering $26 a share for Take-Two, a 64% premium over the stock's Feb. 15 closing price—the last day it traded before the bid. Take-Two's management rejected the bid on Feb. 22, driving EA to take its pitch directly to investors Feb. 24.

Holding out until after the release would give Take-Two's management tangible proof of the success of its new GTA chapter

Take-Two and EA's combined revenues last year were worth about $4 billion.

18 Perspective Drawings

Below are a series of one and two point perspective drawings from different angles. The purpose of these drawings was to show the relationship between three H-shaped prism. This exercise gave us the opportunity to be creative and explore the spaces that were created.

ONE-point perspective:

TOP: Layered (top view)
BOTTOM: Sturdy (topview)

TOP: Continuous (eye level)
BOTTOM: Confronting (eye level)

TOP: Vigorous (above view)
BOTTOM: Spontaneous (above view)

Three chosen textures in model:

The Elevators

The elevators I designed for transporting my VIP members of both Facebook and Coca-Cola from their headquarters to the meeting place on the valley floor evoke the overall them of the power of the brand name.

Facebook:

The elevator for Faecbook was designed to mimic the 'f-shape' of the well known logo. I wanted to utilise all the space within the elevator, making it a unique space, and not just a platform from getting from point A to point B. My SketchUp model below shows my design for the Facebook elevator.

Coca-Cola:

The elevator I designed for Coca-Cola evokes the idea of the curved surfaces in the well known Coca-Cola logo. I didn't want to add any linear edges to this elevator as the Coca-Cola logo contains many smooth and soft curves. My SketchUp model for this elevator is below.

The Dining Table

The Dining Table I designed to go in the centre of the meeting place for VIP's from both Facebook and Coca-Cola to have meetings. With the design I wanted to blend the concepts from both Facebook and Coca-Cola into the composition of the table. The mixture of linear and curved edges can be seen in the SketchUp model below.

Image Captures and Architecture

The array of images below show my SketchUp models in the CryEngine environment of the Three Sisters.

This image shows the view of both headquarters in the environment, I wanted utilise the Three Sisters by incorporating all the large rock formations within my design. As you can see, I have cut a gap through the middle of the middle 'Sister'. This created the meeting space for the VIP's.

This image shows the Facebook headquarters and the bridge leading to the space in the middle which is above the meeting place

This image shows both bridges leading to the middle section, providing acces from one headquarter to the other. This image also shows the interesting shadows created by the bridges.

This image is within the Coca-Cola headquarters, showing to textures used and the different colours showed in the red glass.

This image shows the textures and bright colours on the Facebook headquarters.

This image shows the meeting place with the 'dining table' in the centre. I opted to add the horizontal beams in order to create a more unique space, as well as creating interesting shadows

A Day Made of Glass

This short film shows a range of different types of glass and its many uses in everyday life. I believe this short video expresses the materiality of my scheme which is the use of glass throughout the architecture.

WEEK 1
A.
This image is a photo montage done on photoshop for a previous course that I completed last year. The course was Design Communications in the Landscape Architecture program. Our task was to take a piece of the UNSW campus and alter the image to create something new and excited while still leaving 30% of the original image. We had to include certain objects such as a body of water, trees, and people.
B.

This image is of the well known Queen Victoria Building located in Sydney's CBD. I found this building interesting as it as one of the last standing fascinating pieces of Architecture left in Sydney. The external beauty of the building is carried on inside, where you can find high arches and wonderful works of art. The QVB was designed by George McRae and completed in 1898.
C.
This image was taken by Gary McParland and is titled 'Entwined'. I found this image on a website where the author encourages viewers to capture the beauty of nature, which can be represented with trees. The author of the site, Bill Jones provided a set of 30 inspirational images of trees and their surrounding landscapes.

This video expresses the creative uses of architectural glass throughout everyday life. A variety of glass is represented in model as I believe that glass is a wonderful material to design with.

FINAL SUBMISSION :
This image shows a ground level  view of my model, the main materials in this image are glass and concrete with my custom pattern of hatched,

This image shows a perspective of my model where you are able to see the entire model, the top studio, the gallery space and the bottom studio.

This image shows a higher angled perspective view which provides a view down towards the model where you are able to see the steps leading from the gallery to the bottom studio.
